Are your Search Engine rankings slowly creeping down the list, or worse yet, a few pages deep? Although there are many evolving factors to great search engine rankings, here are a few reasons (with fairly simple fixes) that might help.

If you have a site with an older design (3-4 years or older), sluggish load times, bloated code, and a poor mobile experience, you are going to get outranked by newer sites with a fresh contemporary, fast speeds, and orderly, clean code.

In other words, those newer sites are going to have a better user experience, which makes visitors and search engine crawlers happy. Let’s see how we can fix these mistakes.

1. Outdated design

A user wants to land on your site and feel like they can trust you. An outdated design tends to shy users away. And if it is an older design, the SEO is probably not as search engine friendly as newer websites. We have started working with WordPress theme provider Elegant Themes and have found the best designed WordPress sites on the web. Check them out here.

2. Slow webpage load times

People will abandon your site if it takes longer than four seconds to load. How fast does it take your site to load? And of course web hosting plays a big part. We have had a great experience with Bluehost.com and highly recommend their plans. Even the Shared plan at $4.95 a month is a great high performing piece of real estate for your website.

3. Outdated code

The number of SEO changes in the last few years is impossible to count. That’s why some organizations have made a killing in just offering the sole service of SEO management. It is a full time job. So, an older website that hasn’t been updated is probably sporting a chaotic mess of old code.

You need to provide search engine crawlers with an orderly, updated page of code, to get good (if not great) search engine ranking.

4. Poor mobile experience

You do not need to have a separate site for mobile users. You just need a responsive web design. You can read more about Mobile Websites and Responsive Web Design here.

The good news about redesigning your site

Ten years ago updating your website was a pain in the neck and very costly, but not anymore. There are a number of Content Management System websites like WordPress and Drupal that make it very easy to update your website and keep it updated and optimal for search engine rankings.

If it is something you are interested in learning how to do yourself, start with a great hosting company like Bluehost whose technical support team is far superior to anyone else I have tried and they will walk you through the steps of getting your hosting all set up and ready for your WordPress theme.

And then get yourself enrolled with Elegant Themes for your Premium WordPress themes. At $69 per year, you will have access to dozens of excellently designs. There are multiple categories to choose from and most of them are already well coded, SEO friendly and designed responsively for mobile devices. The best part is their technical support is far superior to any of the other WordPress developer sites I used and they will teach you everything you need to know to make your site customized to your heart’s desire.

And of course, there’s always the option of finding a solid designer to put all this together for you so that you can continue to do what you do best. If that’s you, send me an email or give me a call. I think I might know someone 😉
